The curtains in Courtney's room had been left open the night before, and the sun, that merciless son of a bitch, was bound and determined not to let her sleep in.
Or let her head rest in peace.
Her skull felt like it was constricting against her brain, which at the same time, felt like it had swelled to two times its size overnight.
Translation: Monster of a headache.
She rolled over with a groan and tossed her arm over her eyes to shield them from the bright light. Why hadn't she closed the curtains?
And more importantly, how had she gotten to bed? With her clothes on?
Why had she done that?
Then, as she shifted, she realized her bra was unhooked. Not off completely, just unhooked so the thing was hanging loose and all twisted up in her shirt.
Uncomfortable much?
Also, odd.
And not something she'd do.
Had Megan helped her to bed?
Megan.
Courtney shot out up in bed, and a little too fast because the whole room tilted sideways, which wasn't good for her already throbbing head.
She groaned again and placed the heel of her hand to her forehead as though that would make the pounding cease.
Not even close.
In fact, it got worse.
With a wince, she grappled for her cell phone, which had been placed on the night stand.
Funny, she didn't remember setting it there.
The little light in the upper corner was blinking, indicating she had a new message. She touched the screen, and brought up her text messages.
There, was a new unread message from Megan, received at twelve-fifteen a.m.
I'm fine. With Joel.
Then, sent a few minutes later:
Sorry if I made you worry.
With a scowl, Courtney scrolled back to the previous message and saw one she'd sent at ten-thirty three:
Just making sure you're okay. Text me to let me know.
She read the text again, trying to remember sending it last night and came up blank.
Had she really been so drunk that she couldn't even remember texting her friend or putting herself to bed?
And how had she gotten home? She and Megan had arrived together, then Megan left with Joel, leaving Courtney withâ¦
Ah, hell.
Grant must have been the one to drive her home, texted Megan, and put her to bed.
Put her to bed.
Courtney flopped back down and let out her third groan in as many minutes.
Oh, Lord, how drunk had she been? Had she come onto him?
Lacy once had told her that Courtney got particularly chatty when too much alcohol was in her system. The knowledge didn't make her feel any better about what may or may not have happened the previous night.
Just the idea that he'd been in her room, near her bed and unhooked her bra had an unsettling feeling in the pit of her stomach. How much had he seen? How much had he touched her?
Her clothes, minus her shoes, were still in-tact, so that was good, right?
And even if they had done something, she wouldn't have remembered it anyway. Hell, she couldn't even remember getting home.
Courtney shoved those thoughts aside and sent another text to Megan.
